It depends on whether you want a car-like truck or a truck-like car. Both the SUV and the crossover have become the vehicle of choice for families across America. But crossovers or CUVs dominate sales numbers today in mid-size, compact, and subcompact categories. SUVs are still the choice for the adventurous, and most are mid-size or full-size models. The main difference between them is their architecture. SUVs are built on truck platforms and called body-on-frame construction type, and crossovers are built on a car platform, which is called a unibody type of construction.
SUVs: Pros And Cons
SUVs are more rugged. They’re not just more rugged than car-based crossovers, but they’re also roomier, offer easier access, more cargo space, and have a higher driving position than all other cars. The engine under the hood of an SUV is usually a powerful turbocharged V6 or V8 that allows them to haul a lot of cargo and tow a boat or a trailer. Only full-size pickup trucks have more towing capacity than SUVs. Most offer three rows of seats that can comfortably accommodate entire families along with their luggage. SUVs also have 4WD with low-range gears that allow them to go anywhere in extreme conditions. However, SUVs are heavier and not as agile as cars. Driving in cities and parking can be a challenge. They’re not very fuel-efficient and are more expensive as well.
Crossovers: Pros and Cons
Crossovers are practical alternatives to hatchbacks and sedans. Their car-based construction makes them lighter, nimbler, easier to drive, and easier to park than SUVs. Some even rival sporty cars in terms of performance and maneuverability. Subcompact and compact crossovers offer two rows of seats, while mid-size crossovers offer three spacious rows that work beautifully for families. Most are front-wheel drive, so no new skills are required to learn to drive them. Some even have all-wheel drive with sophisticated traction management and are capable of light off-roading. Crossovers also tend to be more expensive than equivalent passenger cars. And minivans are still the best option for people with small kids as their sliding doors, three rows of seats, and other features make them super convenient.
